There’s something so beautiful about warmer weather in the Midwest, longer days, fresh air, open windows, backyard evenings, gardening, walks, and time outside with family. But along with all the beauty of the season comes one thing we can’t ignore…bug season.
As temperatures rise and rain becomes more common, mosquitoes, ticks, flies, gnats, and other pests start showing up everywhere. While it’s completely normal this time of year, it’s also a good reminder to be a little more intentional about protecting ourselves naturally.
Why bugs are so bad this time of year…warm weather + moisture = the perfect environment for bugs to thrive.
Mosquitoes especially love standing water and humid evenings, while ticks become more active in grassy and wooded areas throughout late spring and summer. Even everyday outdoor activities like gardening, hiking, walking the dog, or spending time in your backyard can increase exposure. That doesn’t mean we need to fear being outside, it just means we should take a few smart precautions.
Simple ways to protect yourself naturally. One thing I’ve been tryingt o focus on more is using nontoxic and more natural options whenever possible, especially around the home and family. There are actually a lot of simple things you can do to help reduce bug exposure naturally.
A few easy habits: wear long sleeves or pants durning peak mosquito hours, do tick checks after being outside, keep grass trimmed and yard maintained, remove standing water around your home, use natural bug repellents when outdoors, add plants like lavender, basil, or peppermint around outdoor spaces.
You can still enjoy summer without feeling like you need to completely avoid the outdoors.
My Favorite Non-toxic Bug Season Products:
Bug season is just part of life in the Midwest, but with a little preparation, you can still fully enjoy the beauty of the season. Open the windows, go for the walks, plant the garden, sit outside at sunset and just don’t forget the bug spray.
Stay safe, stay bite free, and enjoy the season naturally.
A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit saps a person’s strength.
